In my work, I explore how cultural heritage and contemporary identity clash and converge in heterotopias, or "othered" spaces between tradition and modernity, individualism and collective identity, East and West, particularly in the context of the Asian-American experience. By utilizing heterotopias—spaces that are both real and imagined, familiar yet othered—I seek to visualize the transformation of spaces and identities. The paintings reflect the fragmentation of cultural identity and how minority bodies, particularly Asian bodies in the West, inhabit and transform spaces can become ‘othered’—physically and metaphorically.
